Now this is exciting. Early next year I’m going to be visiting my sister in Australia, so I’m going to make a proper journey of it, spend a few weeks there and play some gigs at the Adelaide Fringe! Well, I’ve done the Edinburgh Fringe a few times now- if I’m going to the other side of the world let’s give Adelaide a try…
Three Successful Fringe Gigs
The “Make Tea, Not War” concerts held at the Quaker Meeting House over the Fringe collectively raised £373.50 for the Meeting House’s designated charities this year: Mary’s Meals, Aid and Abet and Quaker work. Huge thanks to Milly Hoddo, Ryan Gibson and Mark Borthwick for taking part and to everyone who helped out.
5th of August- (slightly delayed) review
Make Tea Not War
7.00-9.00pm, 5th August (preview) and 27th and 28th August
Quaker Meeting House, Venue 40
Majk Stokes (comedy singer-songwriter) and Milly Hoddo (handpan drummer)
A delight of unique songs, both funny and serious, poetry and music.
Highly recommended. Not to be missed!
Majk started the evening with his own songs on subjects ranging from love (including a quirky love song about beetroot) to the effects of too much caffeine, bears in the woods, and time travel.
He also tackled environmental issues, with some serious messages but also with an air of entertainment, including a song about nitrogen, a poem hot off the press about rearranging deckchairs and James Lovelock, and some great guitar playing.
Majk literally had the whole audience buzzing with his song ‘we need the bees.’
Milly and her accompanist Ryan continued the show with handpan drums accompanied by two handcrafted guitars. The music was truly mesmerising, and included a fusion of jazz and reggae and some harmonious blues.
If you like a bit of a buzz, some real entertainment and unique music sounds, this is for you!
Next show on 27th and 28th August
Make Tea, Not War- opening concert
On Saturday the 5th we launched the Fringe Programme at the Venue 40, the Quaker Meeting House: the first half was me launching my CD with a collection of songs and poems old and new, and the second half was the glorious sounds of Milly Hoddo and Ryan Gibson playing hang drum and guitar. A comment from an audience member on the way out was:
“The best Fringe show I’ve seen this year”
– and yes, it was only day two of the Fringe, and no, I didn’t feel the need to ask him if he’d seen any other shows yet, but we don’t need to make too much of a fuss of that, do we?
We’re getting there!
It’s looking a bit more like a website now, isn’t it? I know it doesn’t work perfectly on smartphones yet, but it’s getting there. In a couple of weeks’ time you will be able to buy a CD and even download songs. Keep watching this space.
It will get better!
There are photos and everything to come!
Apologies to anyone who’s tried to reach this page and found it just saying Hello World. I know this isn’t much better at the moment, but give me a day or two…
Majk tentatively enters the 21st century!
So after many years of avoiding computers wherever possible, and several months of having a website but not doing anything at all with it, I’m finally getting it together. Impressed? You should be.
